When it comes to wanting to look your best, of course you want to choose the best plastic surgeon for your procedure. Yet, the idea of finding the right one for you can feel intimidating, especially if you’re not sure what to look for. Here are three tips to help you get started.

  1. Check for ABPS Board Certification

Plastic surgeons must pass a rigorous set of exams and meet very strict standards in order to receive their board certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Although of course certification in and of itself should not be the only qualifying factor in choosing your surgeon, being board certified in plastic surgery represents the highest possible level of technical expertise and training in the field.

  2. Look at Before and After Photos

A picture is definitely worth a thousand words when it comes to choosing a plastic surgeon. During your initial meeting, ask to see his or her portfolio (and not just the best pictures that are up on the website) to get a feel for whether results look consistently natural and flattering. The right plastic surgeon should have an impressive visual résumé as well as impeccable credentials.

  3. Trust Your Gut

Finally, assuming all other factors are equal, you may have to go a little bit on instinct. Schedule a consultation with each one of your top picks and see whose bedside manner is the most personable and caring. You can also ask friends or family if they have a particular recommendation of a surgeon they trust and who delivered excellent results. The ideal surgeon should have the just-right combination of skills, expertise and a supportive, engaging manner that lets you know you’re in good hands.
